How to spot phishing emails

Below are some common indicators that an email might be trying to phish you:

- Click this link to find out more type messages. They build up the mystery to appeal to people's curiosity. 

- Short, vague message. People don't typically send a one sentence email asking for something for no reason.  

- Grammatical errors

- Strange or unusual phrasings

- Request for urgent response

- Strange uses of authority or positional power

- Unknown attachments

- Asking for personal information

- Pretending the message is a continuation of a conversation that never happened

- Unknown email address in the from field

- Offering money, products or services that are too good to be true

- Imitating well known companies and claiming that payment is due

When you spot a phish please forward it to reportphish@brockport.edu. We study the messages to learn more about the attackers and to improve our campus training. You can also report the message by using the "Report Message" icon in your Outlook. If enough enough people report the same phish using Outlook, our system will automatically block it for everyone in the future.
